Precautions to take during Monsoon, Stay Healthy during Rains, by AMC Medical Doctor
Diseases and infections of different kinds spread during
monsoons and range from common cold to typhoid.
Among common illnesses that spread during rains are
respiratory tract infection, pneumonia, dysentery, hepatitis, cholera, Dengue
and typhoid.
Malaria is the most common disease associated with the rainy
season. Ensure that your house and surroundings are clean to avoid air-borne or
water-borne infections.
Sudden drop in temperature may also influence one’s health,
especially of those, who are allergic to cold, asthmatic or diabetic.
Monsoons trigger breathing problems. Dampness in the air
promotes growth of fungus that may be inhaled by individuals. It may also lead
to pneumonia.
Children with a weak immune system are prone to several
viral infections during monsoons. The risk of developing mumps, measles, sore
throat and runny nose in children is also high in monsoon.
To shield yourself from health hazards during monsoon, you
need to take the following steps:
Contact with dirty water should be avoided. Most of the
monsoon infections are water-borne and may cause fungal and bacterial
infections.
Feet and nails should be kept clean so that infections do
not manifest.
Don’t get tempted to eat street food. Ensure proper hygiene
to stay healthy during monsoons.
Prevent cold and cough by keeping yourself warm and dry.
A strong insect-repellent should be applied to keep
mosquitoes away. Moreover, a dosage of anti-malarial drugs during monsoon will
protect you against the risk of malaria.
Ensure that your feet remain dry.
Herbal teas with anti-bacterial properties will be an apt
food choice for monsoons to boost your immunity.
If you are an asthmatic or diabetic, ensure that the walls
of your house are not damp. Dampness promotes fungal growth.
Don’t stay out for too long during monsoon as this will
expose you to the harmful weather conditions.
